Tips will appear here shortly

What is a Double Bet in Horse Racing?

A double is a bet that features two selections. Both of these picks from expert horse racing tipsters must win for the overall bet to be successful.

Picking out a double winner is obviously more difficult than backing just one winner, with a single bet. The reason that punters take the extra risk and place such bets, is that the rewards on offer are greater.

Take a look at our double tips today and you’ll see that there are some generous odds available, when backing two horses. We work hard to reduce the risk you’ll take to enjoy that extra reward.

How Does the Daily Double Work?

You might have seen the term ‘Daily Double’ used by horse racing betting sites and expert tipsters and wondered how and if it differs from a regular double.

A standard double gives you the opportunity to pick out two horses from any of the races available to bet on across the many race meetings. They don’t even necessarily need to both be running on the same day.

With a Daily Double, you tend to find that there is some kind of link between the two races that the selections are running in. They might be consecutive races from the same card, or big feature races across different meetings.

Picking out two winners from two specified races is more difficult than doing so when you have free rein to choose from all of the upcoming races. Our tips for Daily Double horse racing bets increase your chances of success.

How to Work Out a Double Bet

Let’s give you an example of how winning doubles work at online betting sites. We’ll keep it simple with the bookmaker odds. Here are the two horses that we have backed in our double.

  • Horse A @ 1/1
  • Horse B @ 1/1

We place a £10 bet on this double. If Horse A wins at Evens our £10 stake is returned and we get an additional £10 back in winnings. That gives us £20, which goes on to Horse B at Evens.

If Horse B wins at Evens our £20 stake is returned, plus we receive £20 in additional winnings. It gives us a total return of £40 from an initial £10 investment, of which £30 is profit.

  • £10 on Horse A @ 1/1 = £20 (£10 stake + £10 winnings)
  • £20 on Horse B @ 1/1 = £40 (£20 stake + £20 winnings)

You may have heard of each-way doubles. With each-way bets there are two parts. You place one bet on your horse to win and another bet on your horse to place.

The Each-Way Double Bet Explained

Let’s give you an example of an each-way double. Again, we’ll keep the odds simple. Both horses are 5/1, with place terms of 1/5 for their races.

  • Horse A @ 5/1
  • Horse B @ 5/1

We essentially place two doubles. One on the two horses to both win and another on the horses finishing placed.

This means that a double unit stake of £20 total. Say that both horses win and therefore the place side of the double is also a winner.

In the win part of the bet our initial £10 stake is returned when Horse A wins, along with £50 in winnings. That means that £60 then goes onto Horse B at 5/1, which would see a return of £300 in winnings, plus our £60 stake, giving a total return of £360.

Then on our place side of the bet, the 5/1 odds are reduced to 1/1 by the 1/5 place terms. From our earlier example, we know that this gives us a total return of £40, which when we add to the £360, gives us £400:

  • £10 on Horse A @ 5/1 = £60 (£10 stake + £50 winnings)
  • £10 on Horse B @ 5/1 = £360 (£60 stake + £300 winnings)
    +
  • £10 on Horse A @ 1/1 = £20 (£10 stake + £10 winnings)
  • £20 on Horse B @ 1/1 = £40 (£20 stake + £20 winnings)
    = £400

Note from that example that if the horses didn’t win but both placed, you still make some profit.

Our £10 stake from the win part of the bet is lost, but we make £30 profit from the place part, giving us £20 total profit. You can therefore see that by making a double each way, there’s an element of protection, if the horses have reasonably big odds.

When Do We Publish Our Horse Racing Double Tips?

You can enjoy our double tips today and everyday. We release them the day before race day, so you have plenty of time to digest our horse racing double tips and place your bets.

Our AI systems source relevant information to a race in order to run simulations. This can include form, the conditions, course records and other factors.

The factors can vary, depending on the race types. So we will examine different criteria for National Hunt races for example, than Flat races.

All of this information needs to be up to date and current, so publishing our expert horse racing selections a day before the race, is about as early as we are able to.
