In a post-COVID era where every ticket sold counts, stadium size can make a huge difference on and off the pitch, and surprisingly, the Bundesliga is the king of stadium capacity among Europe’s top five leagues.
According to the latest Transfermarkt data, the German Bundesliga has an average stadium capacity of 43,306 seats, 6% more than the second-ranked Premier League, showing the country’s strong football fan culture and matchday demand. Even with two more stadiums in total, the Premier League averages 40,830 seats, or nearly 2,500 fewer than those in Germany.
The Spanish La Liga ranks third with an average of 37,337 seats, almost 6,000 less than the Bundesliga. This gap is especially surprising considering that only Germany and Spain have stadiums with more than 80,000 seats (Signal Iduna Park and Santiago Bernabéu), and La Liga has two more stadiums than the Bundesliga. Serie A and Ligue 1 follow, with 18 stadiums each and average capacities of 33,752 and 32,577 seats, respectively.

When measuring total seat count per league, the Premier League is still ahead of the Bundesliga. According to TransferMarkt data, 20 Premier League stadiums can seat a whopping 816,609 people, that`s nearly the entire population of cities like Bologna or Nottingham. The Bundesliga closely follows with 779,525 available stadium seats, while La Liga ranks third with around 747,000.
Together with Serie A and Ligue 1 stadiums, which count nearly 1.2 million stadium seats combined, the total seat count in Europe`s top five football leagues climbs to a staggering 3.5 million, almost matching the entire population of Berlin. This staggering figure clearly illustrates the immense scale of football infrastructure across the Old Continent.
