Spanish Football Giants Barcelona and Real Madrid Hit Over 900 Million Social Media Followers, More than the Entire Population of Europe

Over the years, social media has become an essential tool for football clubs, helping them build global brands, engage with fans, and attract hefty sponsorship deals. While many clubs have successfully turned their Instagram, TikTok, or Facebook audiences into multi-million-dollar revenue streams, two names stand far above the rest.

According to data presented by Betideas.com, Spanish football giants FC Barcelona and Real Madrid boast a combined total of over 900 million social media followers, more than the entire population of Europe.

Barcelona and Real Madrid Have 50 Million More Social Media Followers than the Top 5 Premier League Clubs Combined

Real Madrid’s and Barcelona’s impressive social media dominance comes from their iconic players, decades of global success, and the fierce El Clásico rivalry that captivates fans worldwide. Over the years, these two football giants have had some of the most famous and followed players in the world on their teams, including Messi, Ronaldo, Neymar, and now Bellingham and Vinícius Jr., making nearly every match a global spectacle. Coupled with the early adoption of platforms like TikTok and YouTube Shorts, as well as aggressive digital strategies and multilingual content, both clubs have built online empires that other clubs can’t match. Data from the CIES Football Observatory reveals just how wide that gap is.

Statistics show that Real Madrid and Barcelona count 473 million and 427 million social media followers, respectively, more than the top five Premier League clubs combined. In comparison, third-ranked Manchester United counts 233 million followers, barely half the total of either Spanish club. The gap only widens further down the list. Paris Saint-Germain ranks fourth with 199 million, while Manchester City, Juventus, Liverpool, and Chelsea follow with 179 million, 174 million, 166 million, and 152 million, respectively. Statistics show that Bayern Munich and Arsenal have the fewest social media fans among all football giants, with 149 million and 114 million, respectively.

Instagram is the Leading Social Media Platform for Most Major Football Clubs

Data from the CIES Football Observatory also reveals interesting insights into where football giants attract the majority of their online fan base, with Instagram standing out as the top platform for most clubs.

For example, the world’s most-followed football club, Real Madrid, has 175 million Instagram followers, 45 million more than on Facebook, and more than on X, TikTok, and YouTube combined. Most other top clubs show similar Instagram dominance, with Barcelona at 141 million, Manchester United at 64 million, and Paris Saint-Germain and Manchester City at 63 million and 56 million, respectively.

On the other hand, Liverpool, Chelsea, Bayern Munich, and Arsenal have built their largest fan bases on the world’s biggest social media platform, Facebook, with 51 million, 56 million, 62 million, and 45 million followers, respectively.
