While major esports events like The International and League of Legends Worlds continue to draw millions of viewers and offer huge prize pools, the tournament hype has cooled slightly from the peak years between 2018 and 2021, especially in Western markets. Still, the highest-paying video games of all time are nearing a massive milestone.
According to data presented by Betideas.com, the five highest-paying video games of all time have awarded nearly $1 billion in combined prize money so far.
Top Five Games Have Paid Out More Prize Money Than Major Sports Events
While streaming fatigue, game saturation, and shifting viewer habits have created a more mature but less explosive esports landscape in 2025, the year is still on track to make gaming history. According to Betides’ analysis of Esports Earnings data, which tracks tournament prize pools across the industry, the five highest-paying video games of all time, including Dota 2, Fortnite, Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, League of Legends, and Arena of Valor, have collectively awarded $956 million so far. That figure could jump over $1 billion by the end of the year or in early 2026 at the latest.
To put that in perspective, these five games have paid out more prize money than some of the world’s biggest sporting events and nearly as much as Hollywood’s top-grossing films make at the box office. One billion dollars is more than the combined prize money of Wimbledon, the Tour de France, and the Masters in a typical year. It’s also enough to buy a private island in the Bahamas, a fleet of superyachts, and still have money left over.
Statistics show that Dota 2 alone, the highest-paying video game of all time, has awarded $372,6 million in prize money so far, more than the second-ranked Fortnite and the third-ranked Counter-Strike: Global Offensive combined. Fortnite players have raked in $193.5 million in prize money, followed by CS: GO tournaments with $162.7 million awarded. League of Legends and Arena of Valor trail behind, with $117.9 million and $109.4 million in total payouts, respectively.
Top Five Games Brought in More Than the Next 80 Combined
The EsportsEarnings data also shows that this impressive prize pool was distributed in more than 43,300 tournaments and competitions. The cumulative prize money of these five esports giants is even more impressive when compared to other highest-paying video games. With nearly $1 billion in total prize money, these top titles have outpaced the next eighty video games on the list combined, including titles like PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds, Rocket League, Hearthstone, Apex Legends, and Call of Duty: Warzone.
