Michael Schumacher Stays F1’s Highest-Earning Driver with $1.3 Billion, More than Hamilton, Verstappen and Leclerc’s Wealth Combined

As one of the most expensive sports in the world, Formula 1 has always been flooded with money. Thanks to their massive contracts and heavy endorsement deals, the world’s top three highest-paid F1 drivers, Lewis Hamilton, Max Verstappen, and Charles Leclerc, bring in tens of millions of dollars each season. Yet, none of them has come close to Michael Schumacher, the highest-earning F1 driver of all time.

According to data presented by Betideas.com, Schumacher’s staggering $1.3 billion in lifetime earnings outpaces the combined wealth of Hamilton, Verstappen, and Leclerc.

Schumacher’s Career Earnings Exceed Hamilton’s by Half a Billion and Verstappen’s by Six Times

Even as Formula 1 salaries skyrocket, Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen, the sport’s current top earners, are still nowhere near catching up to the financial legacy of Michael Schumacher, who remains in a league of his own. Even 14 years after his retirement, followed by a tragic skiing accident, the legendary German driver remains F1’s all-time earnings king.

During his iconic career, Michael Schumacher amassed a jaw-dropping $1.36 billion through salaries and endorsements. At his peak, his annual wage reached $38 million per season, while some of the biggest endorsement deals included Mercedes-Benz and Rolex, which paid him $10 million annually each. These deals and partnerships with Nike, Deutsche Vermögensberatun, Schelle, GM, and IWC contributed to his impressive career earnings, cementing his status as one of the highest-paid athletes ever.

Schumacher’s lifetime earnings are even more impressive when compared to those of the biggest money-makers in F1 today. Statistics show that Schumacher earned half a billion more than Lewis Hamilton, the second highest-paid F1 driver of all time, who has raked in $880 million.

His lifetime earnings are also twice as high as those of Fernando Alonso, who made $645 million throughout his career. A comparison with other high-earning F1 drivers reveals even more shocking differences.  For instance, Kimi Raikkonen earned $250 million during his career, or five times less than Schumacher, similar to Max Verstappen, who raked in $217 million so far. Jenson Button, Sebastian Vettel, and Charles Leclerc trail even further behind, with lifetime earnings of $150 million, $140 million, and $125 million, respectively, or roughly one-tenth of Schumacher’s career haul.

Hamilton Would Need 7 Years to Match Schumacher’s Lifetime Earnings, While Verstappen Would Take 14 Years

The enormous earnings gap becomes even more shocking when broken down by time. Last year, Max Verstappen earned $81 million, ranking as the 17th highest-paid athlete in the world. Lewis Hamilton was four places behind, with $69 million earned through salary and endorsements.

Assuming his earnings stay at $69 million per season, Lewis Hamilton would take around 7 years to reach Michael Schumacher’s lifetime earnings of $1.36 billion. Despite earning more per season, Verstappen would need nearly 14 years to catch up, assuming his earnings stay at $81 million per season.
