Steam Breaks Records with 15,400 New Games in 2024, Up 33%

Despite tough competition from consoles and a dip in overall gaming revenue, Steam is still going strong thanks to its massive and dedicated fanbase. Since launching in 2003, the platform has steadily increased its yearly game releases, with 2019 as the only exception.  However, 2024 broke records, bringing more new games and downloads than ever before.

According to data presented by Betideas.com, Steam hit an all-time high with over 15,400 new games released in 2024, a massive 33% increase from the year before.

New Games are Up by Nearly 70% in Five Years

Steam is flooded with fresh games, and the numbers prove it. The platform has been adding thousands of new titles every year, but 2024 took things to the next level, making it a landmark year for game releases.

AI-powered development tools and streamlined publishing methods have made it easier than ever for creators to launch games on the platform. Plus, millions of players are always looking for new and exciting experiences, further fuelling growth. This demand has pushed Steam’s game library to new heights, far outpacing previous years.

According to Steamspy data, the platform added over 15,400 titles last year, 33% more than the year before. To put that into perspective, this jump is three times bigger than the increase in 2023 and five times higher than in 2022.

In 2023 alone, the platform added over 11,500 new titles, roughly 4,000 less than in 2024, while 2022 saw 10,100 new games. With last year’s record-breaking releases, Steam`s total game count has soared to nearly 89,000. Although these titles vary from classic shooter games to farming simulators, only a handful become big money-makers.

Game Sales Jumped by 25% to 718 Million Units

The rise of Steam’s Early Access program, which allows developers to release unfinished games and get players’ feedback, along with the modding support and Steam Workshop integration, has had a huge role in this growth, breathing new life into games and boosting downloads. At the same time, the community-driven funding through wishlists, crowdfunding, and user reviews has only further fuelled the hype around new games, leading to record-breaking engagement.

Last year, Steam sold an incredible 718 million games, 25% more than a year before and a massive 51% increase from the 475 million games sold in 2018.  This double-digit growth also meant big earnings, with the platform cashing in a record-breaking $10.8 billion last year, $2.1 billion more than in 2023, and the highest figure to date.
